01

Overview

A retail group wanted to launch a marketplace able to compete with established platforms on speed, catalogue depth and vendor tooling.

02

Challenge

Peak traffic, tens of thousands of SKUs from independent vendors, inconsistent product data and a checkout that had to be fast on low-end mobile devices.

03

Solution

A headless Next.js storefront on top of a Node.js commerce API, Elasticsearch-powered search with vendor-aware ranking, and a vendor portal for inventory, pricing and fulfilment.

04

UX / UI

Search first. The catalogue, filters and product pages were designed around how people actually look for things, with recommendations kept honest and unobtrusive.

05

Architecture

Edge-cached storefront, event-driven order pipeline, Elasticsearch for catalogue and recommendations, MongoDB for flexible product data, Stripe for payments and payouts.

06

Development

Load-tested against projected peak from the first sprint; the checkout was rebuilt twice based on real device data before launch.

Results

The marketplace launched on schedule and processed sustained daily order volumes from day one.
